SKAC Foundation

  • Mission
The Mission of The Shui Kuen and Allen Chin Foundation ("The SKAC Foundation") is to honor the values of restaurant owners Shui Kuen and Allen Chin through supporting the educational aspirations of children of workers in the Asian/Pacific Islander food service industry in the United States of America.
  • History/genesis
The selfless commitment and hard work of Shui Kuen and Allen Chin, co-owners and operators of Chung's, a well-known Chinese restaurant in the greater Detroit area, allowed their six children to successfully complete post-secondary education and pursue a diverse range of career paths. With pride, the Chins regularly shared news of their children's latest accomplishments with long-time and new restaurant customers alike. On October 11, 2005, Allen Chin lost his life on his way to the restaurant. Shui Kuen Chin survived the car accident and provided encouragement to her children as they sought to turn the family tragedy into something positive. The result is The Shui Kuen and Allen Chin Foundation.
  • Supporting educational aspirations
The Chin children have decided that The SKAC Foundation's support of educational aspirations will take the form of an annual scholarship award program to be known as The SKAC Scholarship. Subject to change, one (1) annual scholarship of $1,000 will be made.

2006 Scholarship Winners

The SKAC Foundation has exciting, and some long overdue, news to pass along. We have decided to give out three scholarships to three deserving recipients. They are,

first place - Sarin Prakobwanakit
second place - Linda Cheng
third place - Nikki Lac

The Chin Family would also like to thank everyone again for your generous donation to the SKAC Foundation this past year; it has been rather tough getting the foundation off and running this past year but now that things are finally coming together with the announcement of the first recipients, processes are now put in place, and the growing pains of starting a foundation should be ironed out.

Thanks for your continued support!

scholarship update

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your inquiries about the scholarship. We sincerely apologize for the delays, but we are in the midst of relocating the foundation from one host to another. Our new host is reviewing our processes to ensure compliance with their own. We don't expect the delays to last much longer than the next couple of weeks, however, we do want to make sure that this transition is proper and smooth. Be sure to check back here for updates soon.

Thanks for your patience.

Happy Holidays

This first year of the Foundation has been a tremendous success, thanks to the love and support of the community around us and beyond.

  • The generosity of those who gave to the Foundation this year has given us a firm basis for this year's scholarship and for future scholarships too.
  • The applications poured in before our December 15 deadline, and we're now going through them slowly and carefully. We got nearly five times the number of applications we'd initially expected.
  • Your kind words, thoughts and prayers have helped us take inspiration and loving memories about Dad and used them to fuel our efforts to give back.

And so, warm wishes for this holiday season to everyone, and may next year bring you all that you hope for. If you are still considering year end charitable donations for the 2006 tax year, please consider helping us continue our support of young students in their efforts to make their dreams real. You can click on the "donate now" button at the right or this link below. Thanks for your continued support!

UPDATE: We've pulled the link and the button at right while we sort out our partner. Thanks for your interest in giving. We'll be sure to provide more info once it's all figured out.

Application & Eligibility

Apparently, it's been difficult to find the application here on the website. For ease of reference, here is another link from which you can download the document:

[the application period has ended]

There have also been quite a few questions about eligibility. The scholarship is intended for students who are currently enrolled in accredited colleges and universities seeking a degree. Based on your feedback, we may review this for the future, but this will be the guideline for this year's eligibility. This is an effort on the part of the Foundation to help students avoid what befell Dad when he was unable to complete the college education he'd begun, in part, for financial reasons.

scholarship update, minor changes

A couple of changes to the scholarship application process to note...

With the holiday season upon us and most of the Chin family getting together in a couple of weeks, we've decided to extend the eligible application period. The new deadline to submit your completed application is DECEMBER 15th.

We've also clarified that official transcripts will be requested of finalists only. This will save the hassle and expense for others who apply. Finalists will need to provide an official transcript, and if your school does not offer electronic, verifiable versions (online or fax), then we'll provide a mailing address as necessary.

Hope that hasn't caused anyone undue inconvenience! Best of luck to all applicants!

happy birthday, mom

Today is Mom's birthday.

Birthdays were always kind of a big deal around our house, but with the way we all doted on Mom, her's was even more of a big deal. When we were younger, we'd all go out for dinner. As we got older, we made sure to give Mom and Dad some alone time.

The thing I'll remember most though, was how Dad always seemed to surprise Mom with a gift from out of nowhere. Seeing as how they lived and worked together all the time, we would always be amazed how he could actually surprise her. Sometimes it would be jewelry, but usually there'd be some clothes. Dad always knew Mom's size and knew not only what would look great on her, but also what she'd love too. I can't remember even once when he got it wrong.

Maybe Dad can be with us all today and help make sure that all the things we got for Mom were just right too.

Happy Birthday, Mom.

in loving remembrance...

So today makes one year. One year since the day that changed all our lives. One year since all of us, wherever we were, got phone calls that we'll never forget.

And as this Foundation and all of our hopes and dreams to honor our parents' legacy are slowly coming into being, we take this anniversary as a chance to take another step towards, not moving on, but moving forward.

thinking of dad

Tomorrow's the anniversary. We'll be announcing the scholarship. But I can't help but just be absolutely flattened remembering losing Dad so suddenly. I went back and posted the eulogy I gave at his funeral on that date last year.

If it's in your beliefs, please take a moment to say a prayer for Dad; if not, maybe take a moment to bring back a memory or two of him. One of mine is the time he surprised me by writing a long card to encourage me after the band broke up and I was moving back to New York City without a job or a place to live. He told me how proud he would always be of me, no matter what. It was just what I needed, just when I needed it - just like him.

two grandkids

So two little ones were added to the family this summer. And though it breaks our hearts that Dad's life ended before theirs began, we know Dad's watching over them still...
